Last night...

Last night Jerad and Dad brought home the other old truck. They took the bed off and Jerad proceeded to peel off the rear dif cover plate or whatever it is called. From the looks of it, it will work for our project. Jerad and Dad are pretty excited. We won't know for sure until we get it entirely tore down, but it looks very promising!
I left the guys outside and when I went back out to check they had most of the front end off of the truck and will be ready to remove the cab next. I'm excited about it all.
I have also located another truck in Oklahoma that will be perfect as a prop for my photography business and Jerad can potentially use parts off of it as well.
Here are a few pics from yesterday.

A possible solution practically in our own back yard!

After the dissapointment on the rear dif we spent some time looking for parts to rebuild or another old Chevy that we could possibly use the rear end. I made several phone calls and found trucks in Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas..in fact just about everywhere. Then someone gave me a name of guy to call and see if he had any ideas. Turns out he just recently bought a 49' for the frame. The guy lives about 2 blocks away from us. Now isn't that great? We went to take a look and I've included some pictures. If Jerad tears it down to frame, he said he could have the rear end; he just wants the frame. As you all know we already have our frame...so it works out perfect! So if the rear dif is any good, it will solve our latest problem!

In the Meantime....

Yesterday after the dissapointment on the rear dif. Jerad started tearing down the engine. It's officially now all in pieces. It doesn't look too bad, but will need some machine work on the block and crankshaft. He gave it a power washing today to knock all the gunk off of it. I got a lesson in how water and steel react and create rust...very rapidly I might add. So if someone tells me to do something before it rusts up...they mean do it FAST!! I didn't have any idea we had to coat that puppy like a bikini clad sunbather in the tropics for protection. A couple of pics before her bath. Hopefully he will be able to give her a "hot tank" bath sometime later this week.
A little bit of dissapointment...

Jerad tore the rear differential down yesterday. When he got it apart the ring and pinion were all torn up as were the axles. A huge dissapointment. Originally we calculated we could have the rear end cleaned up and ready to re-bearing and re-seal within a few days. Which would put us that much closer to having it on wheels and tires in the near future. We were so excited to be making so much progress so quickly. Oh well...the good Lord must have needed us to slow it down a notch or two.
I'm including some pictures of the parts and pieces that were so chewed up. I am not sure how much detail you can see from the low-res pictures. Jerad had to explain a few things to me for me to understand why this rear end is shot. Now I get it and I'm just as unhappy.

Another addition to the old Chevy

Jerad has spent the last few days working on wheel hubs, brake drums, wheel cylinders, & new brake pads. He also rebuilt the tie rod ends. All of them have been painted and installed on the front axle.
He has a few little odds and ends to work on to finish the front end. His next couple of projects (at this point) will be rebuilding master cylinder and rebuilding the rear differential.
He's keeping his eyes peeled for new wheels and tires so the old girl can set on her own soon.
